The idea behind photographic searching and discovery is to explore identity construction and existentialism by using landscape, space, and time as lenses. How do changes occur as we move through space and navigate the emotional geography of our past and present selves? Our bodily experiences are stored within our bodies.

Ophey Chan collaborated with a Hong Kong artist and illustrator named YuenJai, based in London. The artwork represents the visible and invisible, and how different perspectives can affect how we see things. The separation of the artworks symbolizes how we may not see the whole picture without first-hand experience. This idea highlights the connection between individuals' autonomy and collective experience.

A series of photographic prints, "UP & DOWN," captures somatic movement through the lens. The inspiration for this series stems from the political movement symbolizing togetherness and resilience " WE GO UP AND DOWN TOGETHER" , and also Bruce Lee's philosophy, "Be Water." This philosophy resonates as a cultural identity and activism for Hongkongers.

The body in various spaces and landscapes embodies the somatic practice of "up" and "down" — rising to resist authority and descending like the tide to reflect resilience, human values, and social justice. These images reflect the ebb and flow of our collective struggle and perseverance.

Move Together, 2024

Acrylic on Four Acrylic Sheets

210 x 297mm each Acrylic Sheet

A joyous gathering of light and energy occurs when individual entities come together to dance in unison. As they intertwine, their movements resonate with a sense of togetherness and connection, shaping the world around them. Each entity contributes to the dynamic rhythm of the dance, creating a harmonious flow that transcends individuality. Together, they embody the transformative power of collective movement, shaping the world into a vibrant tapestry of shared experience and expression.

Forbidden Vs. Resilience, 2024

Acrylic on Four Acrylic Sheets

210 x 297mm each Acrylic Sheet

The artwork portrays undulating waves that take on unique shapes emanating from a central point. These waves represent the inner voices that permeate the universe, echoing across vast distances. The painting invites you to listen closely, to tune in to the subtle vibrations captured within its colours and forms. Despite physical separation, everything remains interconnected and reaches out to touch even those who stand afar. The forbidden voice, relentless and unstoppable, echoes the rapid growth of liberty and freedom, refusing to be silenced. Can you hear it?

CAN WE?, 2024

Acrylic on Four Acrylic Sheets

210 x 297mm each Acrylic Sheet

Some pieces appear to be falling, some are rising, and some are in between. Despite our apparent separation, we all exist in the same world. Can we synchronize our actions and be in the same place at the same time? Can we truly understand and connect with each other? These are the questions that this painting seems to invite us to ponder.

Flowers Blooming Everywhere, 2024

Acrylic on Four Acrylic Sheets

 297 x 420mm each Acrylic Sheets

The subtle gaps between the spirals occur at different times, zones, and spaces, as well as within the sheets themselves, with a precision of 0.2mm. Living life to the fullest requires more than just existence - it requires care, freedom, and honesty. The voice of Liberty and freedom of speech are unstoppable and untouchable, much like a blooming flower or a rapidly growing plant that represents human free will.

WHERE, 2024

Acrylic on Four Acrylic Sheets

210 x 297mm each Acrylic Sheets

The varied blue spheres are depicted, each engaged in a mutual gaze with the others. However, it's ambiguous for who is observing them from outside, It's conceivable that we are the ones who, as viewers, inhabit the space inside the frame, and the blue spheres are looking at us. Regardless, they coexist within the confines of the same frame, inviting contemplation on the nature of perception and perspective.
